I would have said the same thing, but it sounds like he doesn't have the equipment handy.

:iagree:   Thats why I said top. It sounds to dangerous for a first time and not enough propper equipment

We have an equipment rental place here, but I don't know if the have a hoist big enough.  Most engine hoists I have seen are rated 1000 to 1500 pounds.  Is that enough to lift the front of the car high enough?  If it is, my ATV lift will support the engine/trans so I can roll it out and lower the front onto jackstands.  Or, maybe I will just disconnect everything and take the radiator, grill, etc.. out and take it out the top.

I'll let you know what I can find to rent and see what you think.

Will this same procedure work for installing a new (k) member?

I have done 1/2 a dozen without a cherry picker , just put tall stands uner the front of the leaf spring hangers & use the diff & extra weight in the rear oft the car to counterbalance the the weight & lift the nose of the car by hand & have a frind ratchet up & stand to hold the nose up whilel yopu roll the engine under the nose of the car , then let the nose down & install the 4 K fdrame bolts & tranny X member boplts & jack up the nose of the car & tighten up all the bolts
