hole size for e-brake cable in X-member
« on: September 17, 2010 - 01:03:28 PM »
I've got a new Fine Lines e-brake cable and it won't go into the hole on the back side of the torsion bar X-member.  I don't know if this area was fixed and a smaller hole redrilled or if the cable is bigger in diameter.  What is the stock hole size on a 71-74 Challenger for the e-brake cable?  This is the hole that the clip snaps into.  Thanks

Thank you.  With paint buildup, mine's less than 3/8.  I'll double check the diameter of the origonal cable just to be sure.  Thanks again.

The gromet that is repopped is not the same style that came on the car origonally.  Does the gromet go on the outside of the floorpan or on the inside?  Here is a pic of the origonal cable and gromet.  This looks like it went on from the inside.

Kind of getting out of the "bodyshop" theme here but I don't really want to start another thread on the same subject.

Is the retainer supposed to go all the way to the cable flange?  The cable goes into the retainer and stops about 1/4 before the flange hits the retainer.  The end of the retainer is cupped and stops the cable from going any further.  Do I need to take the mechanism out of the car and tap the cable on farther?

the flange should sit flush & the grommet is outside of the floor pan

I just put mine in last weekend.  Mine was from inline tube. It was a tight fit and needed a little "coaxing" but it did go in.

I saw a pic of Mike Ross's pink T/A and the grommet was installed from inside the vehicle.  I e-mailed him about it and he said the cable was installed from inside the car(already attached to the e-brake mechanism) so the grommet has to be on the inside.
