converter and tranny combo for my built 400 with 440 crank
« on: September 12, 2010 - 11:27:34 AM »
Trying to figure out what I should put behind this motor for a tranny. The builder said it is about 425HP and he had it with a 3500 stall convertor and reverse manual shift 727. He said the tranny was built so you had to manually shift it. I'd rather have a tranny where I can just drop it in D and let it go thru the gears around town like an automatic should. I was thinking the 3500 was too high for street use so I opted to not buy his tranny.

What tranny and convertor should I look for or should I just go and get his tranny and converter?- I have a column shift and I want to keep it stock looking, so I'm keeping hte column. I think it would be hard to try and power shift a column with the gas mashed

I have a 70 barracuda going from the 318 to this big block

What gears do you have in the rear end, and what diameter of rear tires do you have? I agree a 3500 stall is crazy for the street, but if you have 4:10 gears and small tires...

:horse: Not sure which gears are in it. I thought the guy said it was stock, but I plan on putting a posi carrier around 3.73, if there isn't one already.

I'm planning on 17x8 rears and 17x7 fronts.

the converter needs to match the cam & powerband of the engine so if the engine starts to make power at 2000 RPM , I would use a 2200-2400 stall converter
