400 or 440 for my 318 swap
« on: September 11, 2010 - 01:36:05 AM »
I've been looking for a while and havent found anything decent in a built 440 in my area without going for the local guru engine builder charging me 4k+ for a decent motor. I did find a guy who has a fully documented with receipts 4006530400 400 casting motor built to about 425 HP he guessed. He said he has only put 600 miles on it and judging from looking in the valve cover oil cap- it looks brand new. He's asking 1100 and the receipts alone show about 3k.

the cam is: Mopar Performance #312-P4120235
Purple Shaft Cam & Lifter Kit
Adv. Duration: 284°/284°
Dur. @ .050'': 241°/241°
Lift: .484''/.484''

holley 750 double pumper new
and weiland action hi rise manifold
KB pistons .30 over
+ all the machine work and
raceprep crankshaft?
and PAWS 440 s/s cyl heads with 290 cfm on the intake
and 217 cfm on the
exhaust

I have always thought I would pull that 318 and put a proper 440 in and I even have the swap motor mounts from shumaker ready to go for a big block. My local engine guy said the 400 is a better motor anyway and if it was him he would put a built 400 in a 70 cuda clone like mine- course he wants to build me a screamer 400

Should I go for the $1100 400 or hold out for a 440? and If i get the 400 what decal could I put on the side I always thought it would say 440 on the hockey stripe

Sounds like a very good deal for a nice street motor....Big upgrade from the 318

turns out the "race prep crank" was a 440 crank and the engine shop did the balancing- turns out that motor is now a 451 - we'll see just how fast once its in- any thoughts on who's 727 I should buy for the street?

I'm guessing a 2500 or 3000 stall on a 727
