904 trans buildup
« on: September 30, 2010 - 07:23:42 AM »
I am building 904 trans for my friends street/strip car. Its has small block with somewhere around 500horsepower. I know it is lot for small trans but what kind of parts do i need to make it hold. How many clutches in front drum? What kind of shift kit or valve body? Good band of course.

What else, all tips are welcome.  :)
Is there needle bearing kit available for 904?

Sauli, what is it going in? Weight of the vehicle makes a difference. I did a HD 904 with a rigid 2nd gear band and 5 high gear clutches-manual VB for a '69 'cuda about 2 years ago that was running I think mid 11's in the 1/4 mile and it is still going today.

I soooo wish you were nearby.  If you hear of a reputable Mopar trans guy in or around Atlanta please let me know.

Thanks, Jim

Hi Terry, It is going to an A-body which weights about 3050lbs with driver. I have built many racing 727 transmissions and also wrote a thesis about it but never 904 for racing.

Is that all what i need,

Race VB
Rigid band 2nd gear
5 high gear clutches (red + kolene steel), do they fit in stock drum?
Kickdown lever?

Any problems if engine revs to 7500rpm?

That should do it. Make sure you use a LBA VB.
