    Accomplishments, Yeah I am glad Saddam took the dirt nap that SOB was really starting to get on the nerves, 98% elegible voters in the country turned out to get a purple finger , (I was there that day guarding the polling routes) try to get those turn out numbers here and they were showing up even though 57mm to 157mm were being lobbed all over the place.

    burnt orange- excellent post. You are well-read.

    A book that explains why the Islamic world is in the shape it's in today is "What Went Wrong". It is a college-level history class paperback, but is an easy read. It chronicles Islams fall from greatness (there were once cultural and scientific leaders).

    Think about this- by keeping the women underfoot, uneducated and at home, their society from the getgo deprive themselves of one-half their resources for greatness. The boys see how dad treats mom, picks up on it real quickly, treats all women that way. No Valentines day in the Islamic world!

    dodj makes an excellent point, calling it an "unattainable task". Our military is the best in the world at routing bad guys, but no military on earth can change a culture.

    I agree we won on all the military levels.  The failure in that country is along the same failures seen in New Orleans after Katrina.  For some reason we didn't step up to provide the care expected (from their view and most US citizens).  I don't know if it could have been handled better but in both cases we failed miserably.  There was a void in the infra structure created by both situations and in many cases we let the wrong element step into the void.  I view it more of a leadership issue and not being prepared for the obvious when the normal infra structure disappears.   

    I prefer if we were more isolationists but Iran made a big difference to the world.  Before that event there was doubt that our military could impact any moslem country.  Our people were viewed as apathetic and didn't have the will to pay the price of any conflict.  Our military showed it had the ability to walk all over one of the best equipped armies in that part of the world (thanks to France and Russia).  We thumbed our nose at the world and said we don't need you.  Yank our chain and we will may you pay.  We stayed in a country far longer than anyone expected and got a reasonable Gov't going.   

    During that process we rediscovered our patriotism and respect for our military personnel.  As a nation we came together and found our core values.  I don’t think I’ve lived in a time where I felt more people appreciate the military and the prices they pay for us.  I think that was huge.  So you can weigh things on one issue or another.  When you look at the big picture I think you have to say, Yes it did make a difference and I appreciate how that one event help bring this nation together.  Do we have problems? Yes, but I think now we know if we have the resolve we can solve most the problems facing this nation here or abroad.   To me that is what that event means and I don’t care if history agrees.  A lot of history doesn’t read between the lines.   Some of the people writing history books have their own agenda.  For me this event had significant meaning and in the end that is all that matters to “ME”.
