U-joints and rear end yoke size
« on: November 03, 2004 - 12:25:37 AM »

So now that I've upgraded the rear end in the 'Cuda from the 7 1/4 to an 8 3/4, I've noticed that the yoke sizes (u-joint area) on the carrier of the 8 3/4 seem bigger then my drive shaft u-joint yokes... is there a way to upgrade the drive shaft ones, or am I looking at a new driveshaft??

The only way to go from the 7260 U joint to the 7290 U joint is to change driveshaft or weld new ends into the tube

Mike, you can get conversion u-joints such as 7260 to 7290. One way fits one size and the other direction fits a different size. I think you will still have to shorten your driveshaft though because the 8 3/4 is longer than the 7 1/2 diff. If so, it would be worth the effort to go to the salvage and find the right yoke to start with so you don't have to deal with the conversion u joints.
