restoring heater blower motor

Can i just put the motor on a buffing whell and get rid of the dorrision, and then spray it with clear ?

Should work or you can coat it with Eastwoods Detail grey paint

What year?  70-71 and maybe 72 were plated zinc.  73-74 were black.  I took mine all appart, taped off the inner bushing areas and glass beaded the case halves.  Painted them gloss black and put it back together.  If yours was plated, you could send your case out and have it replated.  If you want to paint it, Eastwoods "Tank Tone" paint would look OK.

I used a chrome paint to get the zinc look on a few small fasteners I forgot to send out for plating.  The chrome paint is convincing for a small item but may not look the best on a larger part like the blower motor.  It may be worth a try though.

I hope 72s were black. Mine at one time had some black paint on it so when my heater box was rebuit it was painted black. Mine was a June build.

I've heard that factory replacement blowers were black.  I'd look on the housing and find the date code.  If it is a few days/weeks before the build date of the car, it's probably origonal.

Does your VIN sticker have a MDH code in the lower left hand corner?

my build date was 5-72. Pretty positive this is the original silver motor. Where is the date code on the motor ? and what would be an example of it for my build date ?

I believe the last four numbers that are stamped in the front case are the date code.  The first three are the day and the last one is the year.  I'd have to look at mine again to be sure.  Some of my parts are dated in the 260's and 270's.(2692...269th day of 72)

Does your VIN sticker have a MDH (month/date/hour) code in the lower left corner?  They started putting that code on cars in mid 72.  The sticker was printed very close to when the car was completed.  If your date codes are before/right around the build date, you most likely have an origonal part.  If you take your motor appart, you should be able to tell if it was plated or not.  The inside will show signs of plating even if the outside is rusted.

For an example, here is my cars build info.

fender tag says 927 for the SPD  (September 27th scheduled production date)

door sticker says 10-72 (October 72)

MDH code says 121216...it has a misprint, it should read 101216(10 month 12 day 16 hour)

I don,t have a MDH. But it does say the build date of 5-72 on the door sticker. Part of the motor closest to the fan has a 3/4 inch ring of silver. The rest is just a little cruddy. I may have to spray it to bring it back. Will see what the buffing does.
