Primer Questions...
« on: October 23, 2010 - 07:09:36 PM »
Primer seems like it should be straight forward and simple... but naturally things that seem simple quickly get complicated.

I'd like to use PPG DF50LF to prime my 71 challenger.  I had the whole car media blasted, but as I removed the old floors and started preparing for new metal I've exposed areas that still have rust.  After removing the rust and making my repairs; I'd like to prime the area to help prevent corrosion until the car is complete.

I've read that the DF50 gives you about a week to add high build / base coat to before you'll need to sand it and reapply.  I'd like to avoid that if I can because it could be a year before all this body work is finished.  Does anyone know if I'd be OK fore-going the additional primer or should I definitely do this?

What would those of you who are far more experienced than me suggest for the high build if that is what you recommend.

Follow up question:

Who do you folks use for your paint supplies?

Thanks again,

Jon

After I media blasted and stripped the outside I used 5 Star Xtreme direct to metal Primer. It's a Hybrid Epoxy primer. It allows you the option to use it either as an epoxy, sealer, or filler. Final outside final sealer will be PPG. Current reducer is PPG 870 used all the time.
