****WIW 340 Block????
« on: October 26, 2010 - 08:12:08 PM »
Ran across an opportunity....reads 68 340 block for sale in good shape...never been bored.
What should I look out for?
I don't really need but was wondering what a fair price would be...Maybe I'll invest.

Just the 340 block, maybe $300 provided it is rebuildable.  If it were a complete rebuildable motor, I would be closer to $1k, provided I had a purpose other than a nice paper weight.

I think the 68 340 has some differences to it?timing cover is cast iron?timing mark is on the passenger side?

Don't know about cast iron, but the timing marks on my 69 cover were reverse. I swapped it out for a newer cover and water pump.

If it's just a block it doesn't matter, it will accept the later parts just fine.

If its a standard 340 block in good condition, it might be worth more than $300. I would agree that a complete '68 340 with a standard bore might fetch $1k, possibly more. The stock steel crank is worth a good chunk by itself. But a complete engine isn't a good buy for everyone. If you're planning a high horsepower build you may not use the stock heads or rods. And if you're thinking about a stroker, the block is about all you'll need anyway.

Realistically, the block, and the steel crankshaft, are the big ticket items. The rest is common to a lot of the other small blocks, and is relatively easy to find/inexpensive.

Interesting topic, I acquired a 68 340 short block many years back just needing a forged crank for the build. It's been filling a corner of the garage every since. If someone were to ask, I personally would not sell it for $300 though as 340 blocks are kinda rare around here and who know, someday the Challenger might need it..

340's are an interesting engine. They just have so much history and nostalgia around them. And prices vary a lot depending on whether or not the person that has it knows anything about them.

I bought my '68 340 short block for under $300, steel crank included. Now, it was already .030 over, but as 340's go it was a pretty good deal. I've also seen them go for twice that, even in need of a larger bore. And 5 minutes after I bought that engine, I probably wouldn't have sold it for twice that, simply because I found a 340!

Realistically, its easier and cheaper to rebuild a 360, and you'll have an extra 20 cubes. But, then you can't say you have a 340 now, can you?

I sold a complete '69 340 short block for $250.00 when market prices were high. I had 400 on it & only one guy made an offer (at the end of the day) so I took it.

I had no way to get it home & cash is easy to carry.
