1973 engine harness
« on: October 17, 2010 - 07:48:04 PM »
Hello All! I purchased a new M+H engine harness for a 1973 small block. Does anyone have or know where I could find a wiring diagram that shows what color wire goes where? I have most of it plugged in, but I'm not sure what colors go to the positive and negative posts on the coil. Thanks in advance.

I'm planning on ordering an M&H harness next month.  Is the engine harness accually two harnesses plugged together like the factory unit?

The harness comes out of the main bulkhead connector and runs over to the Ignition module, voltage regulator, wiper motor and should have a plug for the neutral saftey switch harness.  Then there is a large connector at the back of the passengers side valve cover where another harness plugs into it...for the coil, heat riser, alternator, temp gauge and windshield washer motor.

Is all that included in the engine harness from M&H?  How long did it take to get the harness once you ordered it?  Thanks

I will try and get you a pic of it. I have just started installing it and I'm not 100% sure what connections go where. I have the obvious connections finished. The quality is really good. The connectors look great. It took about 3 weeks to get it. I guess they amke them as they are ordered. I will get back to you with pics soon.

Here are the pics. I'm not 100% sure if all the wires are in the correct place, but I hope I answer your question about the harness. Let me know if you need any more pics. I'm not sure what the 2 connectors, in the last picture, are for. I couldn't find a place to plug them in.

The other 2 connectors are for a 4 prong ballast resister that mounts on the firewall

I am wondering if those are supposed to go to the ballast resister. Do I have the wrong wires hooked up?

Yes you do.    I'm guessing the blue one is for the choke heater module that mounts on the intake & the gray wire is for oil pressure.

4- prong ballast while not necessary is still available at most auto parts stores under $5.00

The 2 prong ballast resister came with my electronic distributer. I am guessing I can use my old 4 prong ballast resister. It is not cracked and is still in good shape.

Thanks for taking those pics.  The new harness is just like the origonal.  I'm pretty sure Bullitt is right about the wires you have connected to the ballast.  The gray wire is oil pressure and the other is for the choke.  It also looks like you have the temp sender wire plugged into the back of the alternator.  The 90 degree fitting with the purple wire goes to the temp sender.  It really doesn't matter but you have the ignition module mounted upside down.  The plug should be on the bottom.   I can't tell where you have the brown wire routed but it is for the electric washer motor.  If you have manual washers I don't know if that wire was just hanging loose or if it was omitted from the harness.

I just bought a new 4 pin ballast at Autozone for $3.99.  I've got some extras that wouldn't clean up well enough so I got a new one.  I'm planning on carrying a couple as backups in the car as well as an extra ECU.

Leave it up to me to install it upside down. I'll flip it around so it looks right. Thanks!! I bought the distributer as a kit. It came with extra wires to change a non- electronic ignition to an electronic. For some reason, the balast resister only has 2 prongs and the electronic ignition box doesn't use all the prong connectors that are on the wiring harness. I am hoping that it will work O.K. with just the distributer.

I think burdar means your voltage regulator is upside-down. ECU looks OK.

Voltage regulator is what I meant.  Thanks for the clarification...I had a brain fart.
