70 Cuda cuts out after it gets warm
« on: November 12, 2010 - 09:33:44 AM »
Hello,

My problem is definitely electrical.  I replaced the engine wiring harness about a week ago on my 70 Barracuda.  Seemed like a quality harness.  Drove the car with no problems.  2 nights ago I decided to go for a ride and the car cut out at the bottom of my street.  I restarted it and it fired right up, ran for 5 seconds and died again.  This happened a few times.  Luckily, I was able to keep it running, turned it around and limped it home.  It did die 2 more times but I made it home.

I replaced the distributor, coil, ballast and the ECU one by one.  After replacing each one the car would still die after idling for a few minutes.  It will idle in my garage (cuz there is no way in hell I'm gonna drive it now) and it will cut out.

I was reading another thread and someone piped in and said that he put a new wire harness and experienced the same problem.

Are there a string of bad harnesses out there?

Thank you to anyone who can help.

Mike

Who's harness is it?

Does it just die all of a sudden or does it sputter and die...like a fuel issue?

When it initally happened (down the street from my house) it sputtered and died but it did refire (with a little cranking).  Now that it's home in my garage, I could just be standing there watching it idle and all of a sudden  -  dead.  No warning.  But  it will re-fire immediately.  Wait 2 minutes and it will die again.

Harness is from Evanswiring.

Thank you.

When it dies, check to see if you have any fuel left in the carb. Maybe fuel filter?

I can't imagine that this is a fuel problem because as soon as it dies, I lean inside and turn the key and it starts immediately.  I did have to think about that though...............

I'm thinking it's the harness.  Up to that point the car was fine.  I put the new engine harness in and now this issue is happening.  Tonight, I will check every connection (especially at the bulkhead).

Thanks to everyone.

I've heard there have been problems with Evans harnesses before.  Connections havn't been crimped good enough.  Good luck!

Harness is from Evanswiring.

I would get a new wiring harness.
