    Start up problem ... HELP

    so i guess for the past year ive had some trouble with my 71 challenger ....

    when i first restored the car it would start up great but now im having issues

    it started with me having to pump the gas twice then the car would start up

    then from that it went to about 5 pumps for it to start...

    now its 5 pumps plus pumping the car while im turning the key .... this causes the battery to drain .... any thoughts ???

    This could be anything. Do you have electronic or point style ignition? Being you have to pump the gas, maybe the accelerator pump needs replaced. How do the spark plugs look?

    as far as the ignition its the same ignition that it rolled of the show floor with ... have not checked the spark plugs but i have not replaced them in 3 years

    Have you checked if you have fuel spraying into the engine when you initially pump it?

    Yes, two first steps....check for fuel as noted above, AND check for spark.   Unhook coil wire from distributor and hold it close to a metal surface but not touching, have someone crank engine over with ignition key.  Should see sparks jump from coil wire to metal "ground".

    The fuel of today is nothing short of sh*t..It evaporates at an alarming rate...You will prolly find the float bowls are empty when you go to crank it up..Other than installing an electric fuel pump to help fill the float bowls, or hook the car to a battery charger and crank the hell outta it...Look at it this way, at least your priming the oil pressure before it fires...

    it could just be a weak fuel pump but the carb should be full & you should see a spray of fuel as the throttle is opened
