Street 440 Horsepower
« on: November 18, 2010 - 07:56:20 PM »
What would be a horsepower estimate for a mild street build 440 with the following:  Mopar purple shaft cam, flowtech headers, edelbrock dual quad intake with 2 edeldrock 500cfm 4 barrel carbs, Mopar distributor with Electronic Ignition, Keith Black flat top pistons?

Need more details to make a serious estimate

Cam Spec:
Comp:
What Heads:

If were talking all mild stuff, I think two 4s is a little over kill.  But if your porting the heads and got a larger duration cam then thats different.

With what you posted I would guess anywhere between 325-400 depending on combo of parts.

375 that's advertised hp.   Go make a pass in your car and also weigh it and we can tell more.  But you only gave a vauge list of parts for us to judge.

Like Don, said, they got to know everything that you know about the motor. As for the M.P. Purple cams, they more than one grind, so which one are you running? Need to know what heads, and if anything has been done to them (if so what all work), what comp ratio, gonna assume a factory bottom end except for the pistons... What are the spec's on the FlowTech, I'd imagine full length tubes, but what size primaries and collectors?

I know what your after and Here it is....You can walk past a 440 on the stand and fart and it'll make big power...

BUT! You gotta know how to fart..This does NOT mean huge tunnel Rams and twin carb's that have the street manners of a top fuel car...
You could step up, get yerself a stroker kit, go for broke @ 500 Inches, and make some real power..

A REALLISTIC approach to HP for the STREET out of a STREETABLE 440 nowadays when Imports with HUGE turbo's are puttin' down 700 HP, is between 450-550 HP IF BUILT CORRECTLY...This means knowing the CC of your heads, Static Compression ratio, Piston to deck height, camshaft overlap, Aluminum VS iron heads, Size of Valves, Size of cam (Lift and Duration @ .050), etc....

Thanks guys... I understand all that.  Was just looking for an estimate on HP for my motor.  Engine is stock except for what was mentioned in my original post.

Got some real life numbers for you.
Had my 440 69 barracuda on a dyno yesterday to check some A/F ratios.

It's 30 over but a pretty scrappy bore as it's been dusted and uses it's share of oil.
Also it's got 340 passes under it's belt since I've had it.
It's got a 484 lift purpleshaft still with std stamped rockers.
Heads are 915s with mild porting.
Compression ratio is an acurately measured 9.3:1
Pipes are 2" primaries into 4" collectors.

You can run multiple carbs if you or someone you know is good with tuning multiples.
I used to have twin edelbrock 500afbs on mine. Now running a 6pack on superstock weiand manifold.
What I'm saying is if tuned to suit, carb selection should have little to do with final outcome.

Anyway,it made 303rwhp which should be pushing 400fwhp.
Burnouts are cool but Traction is the Action
