    Rather than look for that "440" number, you could build a stroker motor from your 340 or a 360 to over 400 cubic inches.  The stroker combo has about a 4 inch stroke,and 4 inch bore.  Everyone on this forum that has one says they have loads of torque, and are fun to drive.  Cost would be very much less than the 440 SB engine your considering.   Then you'll have money left over to work on the suspension to get all that torque to the pavement.
    I have a very similar bore/stroke combo in my old 4x4 work truck, has enough torque to really set you back in the seat even with the truck weighing over 5300 lbs.   :2cents:

    OK, I know enough to be dangerous on that subject from tuning the EFI on my Harley and lots of reading.  The cam profile is highly influential on fuel economy.  ( My profile in the 'cuda makes it a guzzler).  Also, ignition timing is important.  Most of the point in my wanting the small block 440 is to get the big low end torque with the stock (and fuel efficient) conservative cam.  Add in the fact that it is lighter than my 340 and voila.

    I don't have time or facilities to build a motor myself, but I guess I'll start looking into finding a 340 and having it built into a stroker.  I don't really want to use the engine that is in the car.

    FYI the cam in that 440 crate engine was above .600 lift.

    from the catalog: Camshaft: Hydraulic, 251°/257° Duration @ .050", .603" Lift

    the duration and the overlap are substantially less than my 340 cam.  the lift isn't that big of a factor in the low rpm range, nor the fuel economy.

    You will pay plenty for a 340, why not get a 360 which is common and 20 CI bigger to start with.   :burnout:

    Ok so I talked to Mopar today at SEMA and they confirmed there was a problem getting the heads for the crate engine, but that is no longer an issue. They told me if you are having a hard time locating the crate engine or the heads to call their tech line and talk to them and they will put you in touch with the right people. The guy I talked to was Dale and he said if need be have the tech line give him a message and he will take care of it.

    FYI the Mopar booth at SEMA this year is totally awesome. Look for pictures this weekend.

    440 LA small block crate, 540hp $12600
    472 Hemi crate, 525hp $16100
    6.4 3G Hemi w/ carb, 540hp, $17900

    So it is still about $4k cheaper to go small block at comparable power levels than to go old school Hemi and you get that power in a 200# lighter package. The 6.4 may be a bit lighter than the LA, but is $5000 more for the same power level. Ouch!

    It would be nice if Chrysler even tried to be cost/performance competitive with the competition.  Trust me, I know about paying a premium to hotrod Mopars through the years, but the margins just seem to grow & grow.  GM has a 600+ HP & TQ 454 hi-end crate motor for right at $10k.  Even less, if you 'only' want 500+ HP.  Why should Mopar crate motors cost almost twice as much.  I'm not bashing Chrysler or changing camps, but it would be nice if they'd try just a bit to keep 'value' in the equation for these motors... :2cents:

    If you like the small block handling characteristics of an LA but the torquey-ness of a big block a good compromise is the gen 3 Hemi. It's bore centres and crankshaft bearing sizes are the same as the old magnum small block (indeed it used the small block as a basis) but it has a much faster burn and the proven superior flow characteristics of the Hemi twin plug chamber.

    Granted- it's not a simple drop in and go affair.
