ground straps under dash
« on: November 03, 2010 - 09:34:43 PM »
On my 72 challenger I am missing the ground straps under the dash and have no idea where they go I beleive there are two not sure. I have some lights but very dim and a lot of things do not work. If any one has pics or can tell me where they go that would be a big help. Thanks Doug :1zhelp:

Not sure on a '72 but I made up some for my '70 Challenger, fitted to the headlight switch and the car frame behind the instrument panel and the same from the instrument cluster. My wipers now "park". Also made a ground wire from the body of the steering column to the car frame.   :2thumbs:

Now thats interesting.  Wonder if that wouldwork for me?

Was thinking of using a couple of those ground ribbon cables.

Well it certainly cannot hurt, our 40 year old babies have some very poor connections under the dash as nobody goes under there unless they have too.   :2thumbs:

Well, one of my off-season projects will be to fix/swap my speedo (its stuck at 10mph at a stop, and reads high as you drive by that amount).....and maybe eliminate my amp meter (its been said they can cause dash fires although my connections look great).....plus was considering swapping to one of the new voltage regulators for the dash......its a real PITA to pull the cluster so thought I could do all this at once....

Messing with that wiring sort of freaks me out......stuff works right now aside from the speedoissue and I hate to mess with something that mostly works....LOL

My speedo stops at 10 mph also and seems to work up until around 50 mph and then does its own thing. I intend pulling it and cleaning it when I get the Challenger out of storage.

I don't think they had any from the factory. Just relied on the screws and bolts that held the dash frame to the car body. I think installing one from the switch mounting plate to good body ground is a wise idea though.
