"Saving Cars Behind Bars" Needs Some Help
« on: November 10, 2004 - 11:36:30 AM »
We are looking to install a new 426 crate hemi in our 1970 Coronet convertible. It has a 318 automatic with power steering and non power brakes now. My question is, can we use the power steering gearbox that is in the car now with the hemi and can we install a power brake booster?

Thanks,
Deputy Warden Al Barlow

Gosh Al,
You really started yourself out right here by posting a real toughie. ack  I'm not real up on B-bodies, but I don't see a problem with what you want to do. I'm sure "Chryco Psycho" can help you more. Can you share any pictures of this most desireable Mopar beast with us?

Al, you changed your sign on name.  Welcome back! I'm moving this down to the tech section so Chryco will take a look at it.  Yeah, send us some pics...or post a link like you did last time.

We will be doing a frame off, rotisserie restoration on the convertible. It will be an R/T clone with a 426 crate Hemi, P/S, P/B, pistol grip 4-speed with console car with white top, white buckets and white interior and a high impact exterior color. (Haven't decided yet on a color) I will keep the site updated with photos as to our progress. The car has an excellent body for us to start with.

Hey Al
The power steering box will work , you will need different mounts for the pump or a total different pump & mounts , we have spent almost a wekk trying to locate a matched set of pulleys & mounts for the power steering on a Chall I`m working on
The booster is a problem , the Hemi used a special booster & mount to raise the booster up , you will need the smaller diameter booster just to clear the larger valve covers that the Hemi has ,or the easier route is to stay with manual brakes even with the disc brakes , the feel is good with manual disc brakes & I highly recommend using discs with the Hemi

Some people have used the power booster and brackets from an 68-72 A body car with success.

You need a 90 degree adapter from the top of the power steering box pressure fitting to clear the valve cover.

It takes about 3 minutes to get used to the manual discs and then you never want to go back burnout
