Electrical problem, brake lights quit
« on: December 10, 2010 - 03:18:23 PM »
The brake lights  quit working on th 73 Cuda. I've got power though the brake light switch when the pedel is depressed but the lights don't come on. The left and right turn blinkers work fine. Is there a relay or a  connection after the load side of the switch.
Thanks for any help.

There is a connector in the driver's side kick panel. Brake lights, turn sigs, b-ups.

I believe, but am not positive that all rear lights also pass through the turn signal switch as well.  (exc reverse).

Brake lites do go through the turn signal switch & the switch is often the problem ,you can trace power inot the switch on the white wire & it comes back out on 2 wires to each rear tailight , if now power is coming back out of the turn siganl switch you need a new switch , Standard TW7 is the part #

What color are the two wires coming out of the turn signal switch and do they come out of the steering column near the firewall?

yes the wires come out of the plug at the bottom of the column
I think they are green & yellow maybe , I don`t have my manual handy , you  can check the colors at the tailights

Thanks guys. I found the problem. The white wire coming from the steering column was not fully engaged into the large plastic plug at the base of the column. just pushed it in a little further and all is well.(at least for now).
Your info on the path of the wiring was a big help.  FYI. White wire is stop, green and brown are for turn signal.
