Rust treatment - preferred products/treatments?

OK, I have my trunk panel, and extensions removed and am prepping the attachment area for the new repro panels and extensions. There is a lot of area that will be closed out after installation. What is the best method and/or products to treat surface rust?  I would like to treat the inside frame rails, mating overlap areas, and the inside upper areas of the rear quarters. I assume a good old rotary wire brush to knock off the surface rust but then what? What about this POR 15 I here people using? Any other technique or product recommendations?

yep - you were right; a pretty in-depth discussion of rust prevention and removal.

Yep, the more you research it, the more confusing it gets. Who knows if the people who have bad experiences with POR followed the directions? Maybe it's good for hobbyists but not for body shops. I'm just a dumbass with a rusty car and other uses for money.

FWIW, here's the plan I came up with for a non-show driver:

- If the rust is eating through the metal, cut it out and weld in new metal, epoxy primer
- Surface rust up high where I can't get at it (like inside of roof panel) - ignore it
- Surface rust low where moisture collects (like bottom of door) where I can't get at it - POR
- Surface rust I can get at - naval jelly and steel wool, then epoxy primer

The preparation probably makes more difference than whatever you end up putting on top of it.

Rust always wins in the end. The best you can do is make it SEP (Someone Else's Problem).

Interested in other folks' experiences and opinions.

Sounds reasonable to me. I had a car where the rust came through shortly after being painted. That was not good.

If you have a rust hole, cut it out.
Make sure your drains are working.
If you use chemical strippers or rust treatments, make sure to nuetralize them before painting.
Surface prep is everything.
Grind both sides of all welds.
For heaven's sake, park your car indoors!

Miketyler, I've had several friends that used POR-15 on their cars and have really liked how well it's holding up.  I guess you could clean up the surface rust with a wire wheel or a 3M product, then have those areas painted....or you could follow the instructions on POR-15 by just cleaning up the scale rust (if there's any) and then give it a good coat of that stuff.  I've been told POR-15 works better if it can adhere to a rougher surface, so if you do go that route, don't clean up the area too good or it won't stick as well.  Personally, if I were in your position, I'd probably use POR-15 cause it sounds like a very good product.  I've never had to use it, but I've been thinking about putting it on my underbody then painting over it the next time it undergoes a restoration.  I hope this helps you some. dontknow beer

 Well guys I have to come clean, I'm the newbie who put that stuff on every piece of the car, worked great most of the time, last winter I had it not stick to one of the fenders, etched it & everything, did it over & worked fine.     
 I'm learning the stuff has it's place,but this car was so far gone I wanted to protect everything, guess I went a bit overboard, but I do like the stuff & if you follow the instructions it works great!
 I hope to be able to dip & ecoat the next one but if not I will restrict the por 15 to the guts & the underside & work the body with more conventional stuff(which went on over the por anyway! Rich.
