finishing fiberglass hoods
« on: November 22, 2004 - 03:53:20 AM »
Sup guys...

I've purchased a fiberglass bulge hood for my Cuda and am hoping someone has some info or can point me to a site on how to finish this sucker... if I don't cut those scoops just right I'm going to kill myself!

Hey Bilug, pics will help a bunch, once everyone can see where you need to cut out, then someone can probably post some measurements or something to help you out. I have seen these hoods on line and some of them do come without any of the openings cut out yet. Good Luck!

I believe hes talking about the heater slots bellow the windshield, most companys leave them filled and you have to cut them.

You can cut them with a Roto-Zip, but hang on tight or it'll drag you across the hood.

Gotta cut the scoops...I'm not to worried about the louvers under the windshield. I can live without them.

Unless someone out there wants to swap for a metal hood...this is what I have to work with.

This part is from usbody.com

The factory metal hoods were not functional so you really don`t need to cut it unless you want to.Fiberglass is easy to cut,I cut out my six-pak scoop with a hole saw at each end for the curved part and connected the holes with reciprocating saw.If you don`t have air tools just drill a starter hole and use a mini hack saw and sand to the finished shape.

Geeze I got the opposite problem, got a metal hood that someone tried to make operate, then filled the insert with putty, got the inserts off ebay, but they don't weld on ebay :ack:
why do you want to cut them??  Rich

If I don't cut them it seems like they would look funny since they wouldn't look like holes...unless I get really fancy with the paint and shading...NOT!

4cruzin....I paid way too much for the hood and I'm in the northwest. I'd rather just have a factory steel hood but I'm already stuck with this one...I'd take a loss of $$$ for a trade, even if it needed some body work.

I seriously doubt if the factory or repod hood inserts will fit into the contour of the fiberglass hood anyway, sure better double check before cutting, that may be the reason they are not already cut out by the manufacturer? I've seen these hoods but have not looked at them that closely, but the "bulge" just looks more shallow or slender than a stock hood.

You could tape off the insert area and paint black or see if the factory will fit or maybe trim them if needed.

Bilug . . .the reason I was asking was not to try to get you to part with your hood, but to possibly offer you a different solution.  I have a metal hood in the garage that I would probably part with pretty cheap.  I'm in Michigan.  Just trying to help!
