Clutch slipping?
« on: July 02, 2010 - 04:30:15 PM »
I took the car out for a quick run around the block to blow some bodywork dust off it. The steering column has always chattered/vibrated when I let out the clutch and I thought it might just be rust that was causing the clutch to slip a little, and it seemed to be getting better the more I took it out. Today when I backed into my garage(it's a pretty steep hill into my garage) I got about half way up and the hill and the car was barely moving and trying to stall. I haven't had a standard in a long time, so I'm not sure if the clutch is slipping or if it's something else. My timing and carb are out a little because I haven't tuned it since I rebuilt the carb but I don't know if it could be a vacuum thing. I have a new vacuum advance so I know it's working, but the vacuum line might be hooked up to the wrong spot.

It would not stall the engine if the clutch was slipping , if the clutch chatters it could be heat spots in the flywheel or oil on the disc

Thanks. I'll try to get it up on a hoist next week and take a look.

The reason it's trying to stall is because it's under heavy load and the wheels aren't spinning. On the flat the car seems a little sluggish when it's accelerating, that's why I thought it might be rust on the clutch that's causing it to slip

As stated above, I think you've warped the flywheel. And if the clutch were slipping, the engine wouldn't feel sluggish, it would rev uncontrolably when you went to take off, like an automatic that has a clutch pack piston seal worn out...

The way I read this is that you have your foot off the clutch pedal at very slow speed and the motor wants to stall, perhaps you should be slipping the clutch with your foot on the pedal?   :2cents:
The shuddering could be hot spots, rust maybe or oil on disc.

Check for sticking brakes.......

I have my Cuda in a friends garage. I was over there last month helping him with his tranny. So I had to move the car and asked "how long has my parking brake been sticking?"  He says, " everytime I moved it in and out of the garage, I would smell clutch" and "it doesn't roll easily".    I reached underneath and disconnected my right rear parking brake cable.  Got one from Rock Auto for $15.

Remember, when you're backing up and hitting the brakes, your adjusters are cranking tighter too.

I'll check the brakes early next week. When I took the car out today we found the tail shaft bracket wasn't tight. After fixing that it seemed alot better. It still drives like a lumber truck, but I'm ok with that for the time being.

It turns out I'm not an idiot, at least not about this. I couldn't get third gear since I got the car and was told to lock it in neutral with an allen key and adjust the shifter rods. I couldn't find the hole to lock the shifter so I thought I was missing something. Last week I pulled the trans etc to replace the clutch an found what the problem was. The 4 speed was put in with the auto tunnel. The shifter is mounted to the car and not to the mounts on the back of the trans, which had been ground off or broken. The bottom of the shifter was in a tunnel of its own, so I couldn't see the adjusters, and there's an access hole in front of the shifter to get at the rods and the top left bolt on the trans. The bracket for the shifter didn't have a hole to get at the slots to lock everything in neutral, but it does now. I drilled a big old half inch hole in the plate and had to adjust the 3-4 rod by half an inch to get it adjusted. It turns out that I have a 1967 883 with close ratio gears. I figured I would do a little work on the trans while it was out, so it's not marking territory in the garage anymore. Next step is pick up my shaker, 71 quarters, tail panel, sail panel and then hunt down a shaker bubble and a few other little bits. All that's probably going to happen after I finish my 340 though
