Ignition key cylinder replacement ?
« on: November 12, 2010 - 06:03:35 PM »
Anybody got some tips on replacing the cylinders?

Manual says you need 2 tools - steering shaft removal tool and lock plate pin tool.

Where can I get these or is there someother way to remove the shaft and pin?

you will need a special puller to get the crush can off , you need snap ring pliers to get the lower housing off ,a simple pin punch will remove the roll pin , you will need to remove the plate over the lock tab to get at the hidden hole to hold the lock in

I did this for the first time over the summer...its not too bad.

You will need a sterring wheel / harmonic balancer puller (you will likley need to buy longer bolts seperatly) and snap ring pliers.

If you PM me your address I will emial you a very indepth article on how to dissassemle the column.  Its from a member here and helped me a great deal!  :2thumbs:

I am down to the wheel lock mechanism and I do not see the roller pin. All I see is 4 indentions, so under which indention should the  pin be?
Or should I just drill out the indentions and find it?

Also, do you have to take the column out of the car?

Ok, for future use.

You have to take column off, you do not have to take off the steering lock wheel.
Also, do not lose the snap ring(as I did), I had to go to hardware store and buy a pack of them.

If it's any help, I used a 2 bolt steering wheel/pulley remover which fit down in the crush can and it came off without any problem. I have the same question about the lock plate and would like the dissassembly details forwarded to me. the lock plate has me puzzled.

there is a ring over the top of the roll pin through the plate , pry the ring up tap out the roll pin & the lock plate will slide off the shaft , below that there are 2 Phillips screws , remove them & the lever retainer plate will come off revealing the lock release pin
