Bolt on 6-pack hood scoops, anyone?
« on: December 24, 2010 - 01:43:10 AM »
Was wondering if anyone has tried the bolt-on 6pack hood scoops....

Found one here:

http://www.racecomposites.com/sixpackbolt.htm

I have been looking at hoods but aside from the expense just to get a scoop, I am wondering if I will be "ok" with the fact that the fiberglass hoods dont have the cowl vent openings......wondering about vent/heater airflow and of course without the grills there, no place to mount the windshield pisser.....not that i use it a lot.

Started thinking that finding a stock steel hood, cutting the hole and then using a bolt on scopp would be about half the cost......I am not worried about weight, really.

Anyone?

I have a fiberglass scoop for my steel hood. Different manufacturer though, mine doesn't have the bolts molded in. It does look like a more accurate copy of the scoop though. That's what I'd be concerned about, the bolts can be glassed in pretty easily. Some of the auto body bonding products (for new cars) might work pretty good too.

I think the one in the link would take some body work to look right.

I run a bolt on Hemi scoop on my steel hood on my 69 Cuda.I didn't mould it in as I might want to remove at some point and most crack where they get finished anyway.Just a piece of advise for anyone that is going to put a big bug catcher on there hood. This past summer I had the 69 on the highway opened up the dual quads for a run with a porsche and I was very grateful that I had put hood pins in because the hood springs on the hinges were not strong enough for the amount of air that was coming in and we watched the back of the hood raise up about an inch to let air out.

I have a fiberglass six pack scoop bonded to my steel hood and have never been able to keep it from cracking at the edges of the fiberglass and I've never seen a fiberglass scoop that was bonded to a steel hood that didn't crack. Fiberglass and steel have different expansion/contraction rates and the heat from the engine is probably what causes the cracking.

Personally, I would go with the best quality fiberglass flat hood and get a fiberglass 6 pk scoop and mold the two together. Maybe looking for the best components will be better than looking for the all in one deal.
