Let's face it. The closed garage thing sucks. :pissed: Sunlight is a welcome sight to work on your car. Who likes to feel like an animal in a cage? As long as the noise level and non running cars left outside are managed, they really don't have that much ammunition to protest.

Oh but they do when there are recorded ordiances or association rules that prevent working on cars in certain areas.  I've been lucky since working on cars is not allowed where I live but must the neighbors have been pretty decent about it.  I try not to use the impact tools very much since they are really noisy and then the compressor will run too . . . . just to avoid problems.  Only way I could have a problem is if someone complains in writing.  Then if I didn't correct the violation, I would be fined until I did.   :gripe:  :gripe:  :gripe:  :gripe:  :gripe:

Most of my neighbors are watching my progress anyways.  As long as I don't keep them up at night or run over one of their kids, I think I'll be safe.   :grinyes:  :grinno:  :grinyes:  :grinno:

Man, Steve that really blows.  You have posted a lot of good info about your trunk floor repair and I hope that you can keep on keepin' on.
I am in the process of trying to find a house and I know that I will run into problems when I start my resto.  If I could find a couple of acres that weren't over priced or located in the flood plane, I would be set!  Florida sucks!
I am sure that everyone has a "bad neighbor" story.  In my last apartment I just about lost it with the person who lived below me.  Two weeks before I was going to move out I started to work nights.  I found out that person had a habit of blasting their music all day long.  The leasing office people were no help and I called the police twice to no avail.  With the lack of sleep I got so mad that I was just about to cut power to their meter (its handy being an electrician).  But in the end she got hers.  The last day before I was out three police crusers pulled up and came to her door to question her boyfriend, who almost started a gang fight by punching out a girl.  She opened the door for the cops and a huge pot smoke cloud rolled out.  They arrested her for the weed and coke and even took away her two crack babies.  Ahh sweet justice!

:gripe: :gripe: If I complain about any of my neighbors they will probably disown me! All family, most of my work is done in the garage anyway but I have swapped a few engines out in the driveway with the loader on the tractor. Hope your neighbors llighten up a bit, they're just jealous is all.

Been lucky so far,try to keep the noisy stuff to mid day, but I've done everything on the car in my back yard(on the grass) , the second car my be pushin it, it is visible from the street but that hopefully will be plated soon, my wife is the reminder, the noise when i run the compressor & grinders, the smell when I paint, she has no problem letting me know when it gets a bit much :dontknow:
We used to have a retired building inspector in the area, all he did was go around town & turn people in for workin without permits! :(
Hope you can finish your work without further interferance! Rich.

uummm, Dodge Freak , usually people who smoke dope don't care for excessive goverment regulation. Nor would they want to call attention to themselves by ratting out others since they are likely "breaking the law" themselves.  Think about it before you generalize...

*rant on*
this past summer i had a problem with a neighbor that moved in after we did. we were doing some remodeling on the inside of our house and we put the wood and so on that we had removed outside. well the cops came and took pics of my house and we had already cleaned up the yard before we even got any notice. when the notice got to us there were only a few of the things left out there and couldnt find a place that i could take some of it. there was so little stuff that i didnt want to spend the money on a dumpster so i was taking care of it myself. well i didnt get it done til after the date they set for me to have it cleaned up, which is bullsh!t in itself because my land is zoned commercial first of all and second i own this place!!!!!!!! so i had to take a day off of work to go to court to fight my case, the fine they were looking to get out of me was almost 1000 dollars, and when i got there the judge listened to my side and the city attorney didnt even have any paperwork on this matter so he went to look for it and low and behold there was nothing to be found!!!! before i went to court i tried to talk with the police chief here in my small town and he is just a Roscoe P. Coltrain wannabe. he aint got the braind god gave a good farm animal and he also got irate with me on the phone.
i thaught moving to a small town was gonna fix a lot of the bullsh!t that comes with a big town but i found out that its not really that much different.
*rant off*
i  never found out for sure who was doing the b!tching. all i got was a couple pics of the outside of my house and a day off of work.

Depends on your neighbors.    If I had some guy pounding out dents until 1:30 am and testing motors without mufflers at 6AM, Id complain too.   SOme folks like their neighborhood to look nice and neat and that means no primer-mobiles in the driveway, and I can understand that.

Last 'hood I lived in was mostly retiree's and I had some guy that didnt appreciate my youth, I suppose.   I knew who it was.  He was a member of the HOA board as well.   Official Rule was no auto repair in driveway.   If your driveway and garage was full of cars already, you could park on the street overnight, else it was a violation.  My DD at the time (a Lexus mind you) was parked in the street for a few months before I got rid of it after the Challenger was all done.....

ANYWAY.....
Worked on the Challenger in garage, during daylight hours. Nothing bigger than springs, axle work and head R&R and other minor things.   Only ran air compressor and air tools with garage door closed. Intentionally Low Key. Didnt take long  and apparently (according to neighbor across the street, 3months into it.....)     I was one of the subjects of 4 months worth of monthly HOA meetings, where I was supposedly getting nasty letters in the mail about my abhorrent activities that needed to cease immediately.    (I wasnt getting the letters though, and never did)    Towards the end it Got to the point I would be nervous just checking the dipstick, and would wait till dark or do it super fast.

HOA finally Did have a letter go out to entire 'hood that STRONGLY admonished people who parked cars in the driveway instead of inside of their garage, and that garages WERE NOT meant for storage of ANYTHING else and all people should be parking their cars in the garage.  Any cars on street would be towed no warning and that enforcement started next week.    Most of the neighbors took strong offense to it.   But it stuck.

Right before I moved, and had finished what little work I was doing, because this guy had a beef against me they amended the HOA Rules and Regs to state that the ONLY WORK that can be done to a car ANYWHERE on the property (including the garage) , was the changing of a flat tire.    NOTHING ELSE, period  :spank:

Now the trick here is, HOA R and R's can put whatever rules in them they want....  but that doesnt mean they can legally enforce all of them, especially since I didnt sign that version of the R and R's

New place Im at, which has far fewer Retiree's...  has the standard ""no major work on cars even in garages, rules""....     but theres no hassle as long as you keep a low profile.    When I scoped the nieghborhood before buying I noticed there were several other toy cars/bikes in the neighborhood that had to be having some work done on them in the garage so I knew I was going to be safe.

I know a guy who was just putting his car in his garage, and the neighbor came out, and made motions for him to shut the engine off.  He thought that something was wrong, so he killed the engine.  The ***** said "That's better", and went back into her house.  So, he started the engine back up, and she came running back out, screaming her head off, so he yelled back "I'm just putting it in the garage!"  She shut up, and went back inside.  Now, if it was me, I would have revved the engine a few times, before I parked her inside.

It always amazes me about the things people complain about.  There is a new house being built in my parents neighborhood and they were served a notice about having a gravel driveway!  The funny thing is that they aren't done with the house and the gravel will be covered (once the house is done) with pavers!  :grinyes:  These people aren't dragging thier feet with getting the house done or anything like that either.  On top of it, the house is one of the nicest houses in the neighborhood.  (You also can't have a truck heavier than 2 tons on your property.  :eekbig:)

:guitar: It's just unbeliveable the stories/incidents you hear(including these posted here), Yeh, all of us need to use some consideration for neighbors, but sometimes you have to wonder where is THEIR consideration? Before we bought our country property and moveed our cars there I had two in the small garage and two parked outside. The Polara vert was in running order but just sat there because the brakes were shot and the floor pans and trunk was rusted away, the r/r was just a rolling shell, no interior, drivetrain,- nothing. I guess one of the neighbors (which one?) lodged a mild complaint, the lame excuse was the fear of attracting rodents that might find their way to their property, and classified them as junk cars, which the city does have laws against. When the officer came around to make his inspection we were not home, he came back later that evening to tell me of this. He said he went back to the neighbor and told them that these were not junk cars but were classics, and because of the restored Charger and Challenger in the garage knew they were to be restored as well. He told me as long as there were no junk parts, old tires or sheet metal laying around and we kept the property clean and mowed, there was no reason to fear being in violation of the laws in our town. I guess one of the perks of living in a "friendly" town where until you mess up the police are open minded about such things.
