Pure stock drags....not so pure??
« on: December 21, 2010 - 01:14:33 AM »
So anyone else here watch 2010 pure stock drags? The reason I put this in engine forum was because its all about it! ;D So a few years back I paid for the dynomation program (tax refund put to good use!). So I wanted to see how accurate it is, so i compared it to the horsepower figures from their charts. So i started with BoB k's 70 hemi cuda. Entered all the stock hemi specs into the program and spanked out identical numbers to their chart ( I actually could get even more dependin on timing settings). The cuda ran and 11.84 this year, but he was beaten by a 68 1/2 Ram Air II firebird that ran an 11.67!! So i started researching Ram Air II 400s, and I just could not get the numbers from the program that the Pure stock drags charts showed.....even when i intentionally added extra cylinder head flow. All i can figure is that the the car is dialed perfectly for its power output.

On a side note ,what does it matter the L88 vettes will always win there. Just a though thou if they allow L88 Road Race special order vettes at Pure stock drags how come no ones taken a 68 hurst dart or cuda??
Just wanted to start a little bench racing thread in my extreme boredom before the build.

I'm not sure what pure stock drag organization it may be, but I've noticed that pure stock never has been off the showroom floor, mass produced stock. Even if there are highly restrictive rules, they all seem to allow blueprinting and balancing, some sort of alteration to cam timing or mixing of cylinder heads, or like the stock appearing street tire classes, anything goes as long as it looks stock.

Pure stock my patootie.

Just read their rule book and yeah it would seem to allow for some "room"... Thou to give them credit they are pretty restrictive in certain areas in others they just way to open to be allowed for "pure stock". They say that for 2011 the rules will be made more restictive, we will see.

"Pure Stock" F.A.S.T., Etc. they are all the same..Kust like NASCAR...Someone isn't playing by the rules...There's some form of cheating going on..They "Allow" that L88 Vette, cause while it was special order, you could actually title it and drive it on the street legally..That '68 RACE ONLY Hemi Dart and Barracuda? IIRC, they came with a little decal stating something to the effect of "This car to be used in controlled Speed contests and DOES NOT conform to Vehicle motor safety standards of date of manufacturer, and is NOT legal for use upon the public highways"..Your gonna tell me that FAST allows these guys to run a 500 plus C.I. Hemi in that purple challenger? What about those M/T DOT tires with the "painted" lettering on 'em? I never saw anything like those come on a Challenger out of Detroit?

Racing is biased towards whoever has the most money, rather than rules...Just like most car shows are biased to the Corvettes, GT500 Mustangs, HEMI cars, when there are WAY better cars there that have been brought back from the dead..But alas, nobody cares how much time you invested in bringing back a basket case unless it has a HEMI....

A few buddies and myself are trying to get a little "Group" together and start our own drag racing class...
"Grassroots" racing class...This means you have a set amount of money you can spend on your ENTIRE car. You want a $10K paint job? go for it, but that leaves NOTHING for the rest of the car.

You wanna spend $10K in suspension to go roadracing/drag racing/ etc. then, that leaves nothing for the rest of the build...This will tell the True tuners from the "buy it now" croud IMO...Anybody can go spend $60K on a car and go racing...When asked how much cam, head work, piston, rod ratio, etc. they can't ansewer as they don't know...

When I say I'm running a "junkyard" 440, dammit, I'm running a worn out, busted, iron headed, stock cammed, smoking, knocking, ticking, rattling, POS junkyard 440... Not some high dollar 900 Cu. In. Beast I sprayed oil all over and slung some dirt on...The rules are as stated, you get a set amount of money you can spend and go as fast as you can with that amount...You of course, will have to show reciepts for all money's spent, and engines will be built in front of one another so there's no holding back of reciepts, smoking deals from your buddy that works at the local racing shop and just happened to have a set of B1's on the shelf for the low, low price of FREE...
