440 to Hemi Crate in '72 Challenger
« on: November 17, 2004 - 05:15:31 PM »
I was reading the tech page and saw that the Hemi requires a different K-frame for a small block to big block swap.  Is the same true for a 426 Hemi to a 440 car.  I have a '72 Challenger that was a 340 car originally and was swapped to a 440 by the former owner. Will I have to change the K-frame again to accomadate the Hemi?

Welcome
Yes & no , there is a different K frame for the Hemi  due to the exhaust getting in the same place as the mount But Schumakers  -  www.engine-swaps.com   has a great conversion mount to put the Hemi on the V8 K frame

Thanks for the information.  I had heard of a mount swapping option but was not sure as to who carried the parts.

I had a '69 Roadrunner I swapped a 318 with a 904 tranny for a 383 with a 727 tranny out of a '69 Coronet and it was the easiest swap I could have found. Even the wires on the firewall plugged in without a hitch.

Thanks again.

I read that the new crate HEMI can be had with the engine mount ears like the 440

If that's the case your 318 k-member would work just fine with 440 mounts

you might want to add the plate on the bottom for oil pan protection and way bigger torsion bars

I think the crate Hemi with the 4400 mount will have troble fitting exhaust to it

I logged onto Schumachers' website and they have the mounts I was looking for this application.  They also reccomend the TTI headers with this swap which I was anticipating doing anyway.  My only other concern is with the transmission I want to use.  I plan on using the Keisler 5 speed conversion system as I am converting from an automatic with a slap shift.  I will need to know if the position with these new mounts will change any of the tranny and linkage positions.  Keislers system is based on stock applications.  Any Thoughts?

You have been very helpful and I wish to thank you.  I have one other question if I may indulge.  I will be upgrading all the normal performance goodies such as rear disc brakes on the new Moser 60 axle with a trailing link tortion bar, heavy duty springs in the rear as well as Hemi rated torsion bars on the front, frame connectors and torque boxes on the frame, and I am going to get the 528 Hemi 650 HP crate motor from Indy Heads.

My only problem is with carburetion.  I want to use an electronic fuel injection system that is done on a simpler method than what Indy Head offers. Ie. mapps software and calibration that takes a degree from MIT to interpret.  Accael and Edelbrock offer bolt on E.F.I. but not for the rated HP or the motor I have chosen. I believe that Edelbrocks HP rating is only for up to 450  on a 440. I intend to make this car a dependable street machine but don't want to put up with the dual quad set up offered with the motor. Can I pick your brain one more time?

Thanks again.

I have long ago sold the car to somebody who blew the motor and I even think he crushed the car. AAARRRGGGHHH.  I don't know if the motor was original to the car because I wanted to swap the 383 into it as I had made a pretty good deal to get the engine. I guess we will never know.

Sounds like you are traveling a similar road that I am.  My engine is the last thing I am going to build, but I have been doing some research, getting suggestions, and finding the people I would like to get involved with for this undertaking.  I am planning on an EFI Hemi also, and so far the guys at www.moparengineswest.com seem to really know thier stuff and seem to be a good group of guys.  They do have a huge number of orders now and you will have to get on a waiting list though.  When I talked with them in mid September, they weren't taking new orders till Mid December or January 2005.

I also noticed that Indy must have an EFI system available now for crate Hemi's.  Someone had new one for sale on Ebay last week.  I don't know anything about it yet though, but if you are set going with Indy, you might inquire about it.

The http://MoparEnginesWest.com is where I picked up my 500 6Pak Stroker, the guy is very knowlegable and knows his electronics. He builds these for some of the hottest performers around. Just thought I would mention that. I'm sure the above leads others provided are great too!
