Car wont start starter problem?
« on: January 22, 2011 - 10:44:52 AM »
Here is what happened I am using a 1 gal tempoary fuel tank to run the car for now,I added new trans coolant lines.
When I was done with the lines I tried to start the car it was turning over but wouldnt fire up.I assume it was starved for fuel ok no problems yet I add gas to tank. Then the battery ran low trying to start car or so I thought.I charge up battery and had it checked at Autozone they said the battery was good.Put battery back in car headlights work nice and bright turn key nothing put a charger/starter on battery and turn key again now I get that constant clicking noise like the battery is dead and I can hear a humming noise from under the dash that I never heard before.
It`s been a while since I`ve had to do any electrical troublshooting on a car where should I begin.I`m sure it`s something minor related to the starter, just don`t know where to start. Thanks!

If your battery voltage (and capacity) is good, and you are getting that 'clicking' noise, it will be the solenoid grounding that is your problem. Bad/loose/dirty connection or NSS not in the correct state.
If you are just getting one click when you turn the key and the starter doesn't turn over the engine, then you could have a bad +ve connection between the battery and the starter, or a burned out starter.

I got the one click when I tried to start with just the battery hooked up.Then the clicking noise with a charger hooked up to battery. Now that I think about it I did move linkage putting in coolant lines for transmission maybe something got bumped and I reattached the plug for the nss it was sitting up by the master cylinder.I did try starting it in park and neutral and got nothing.I`ll pull the plug off nss and see if it turns over guess I got a little detective work to do.

The clicking sound seems to be a bad connection , bad ground, or relay bad. But usually it is a bad connection when it just clicks

Pulling the connector off the nss will not help you out. It is the nss that supplies the ground for your starter solenoid. If you disconnect it, your ground will definitely be missing. Run a jumper from the solenoid ground to the -ve post of the battery would help determine your start problems.

I pulled the starter out and put jumper cables to it and got nothing I assume it`s dead.I was probably going to need a mini-starter any way to clear the headers when I put in the exhaust system. Probably TTI headers going on the engine. My question are all mini starters the same or do I need a specific one to fit my motor?I have a 318 from 1970.

I think they all fit, but the v6 starters off a '90's vehicle is a bit smaller. Still lots of torque to turn over your 318. Probably enough for a BB but I'm not sure.

As long as the V6 Starter comes off a RWD vehicle...FWD V6 Starters look alot like it'll work, but they are way different...

Thanks everyone for all the help so far I found this one on E-bay does it look like it would work? The ad says it will, but I just want to check with you guys first I trust the knowledge here first!

Will this starter give me enough clearance for headers?
