67' Barracuda Formula S--Real deal?
« on: January 23, 2011 - 03:24:52 PM »

I love the style, but not sure about the premium to pay for a "formula S" car.  It seems pretty clean, yet disassembled, non-numbers car with original 4 speed, claims everything is there.  How can one tell if it's a true 383 formula s anyways?  Are there any tell signs about these early Barracuda's?  The car is local so I will check it out  in a week or so...

Let me know what you guys think? Thanks.

Kevin

I think it would be an H code for a 383

I definitely agree with the H engine code.  The VIN should look like BH23H or BH29H?  I'm more intrigued about the "Formula S" package.  Other cosmetics?  Were there emblems or certain stripes associated with this?  I'm really sure the suspension got an upgrade with this and should have heavy duty springs and possibly sway bars?

Yes the Formula S cars had uprated suspension. Not sure if that helped too much with a big block mounted up front though.
The 383 was rated at 280hp. This power level was down compared to the 325hp levels in other Chrysler models mainly because of the restrictive exhaust needed in the engine bay, which was still very tight despite being two inches wider than in the previous years model.

The 383 powered the Barracuda to mid 14s at 97mph on the drag strip.

I wonder if the 340 version was a faster/better performing car?  I've seen some pics of the BB in there and it's tight to say the least, with the wide block and exhaust manifolds it makes it impossible to change plugs I bet.

Maybe.
The '69 340 Formula S was more refined than the past models and was a dream to drive. It could still pull its weight on the strip too, Hot Rod Magazine ran 14.32 at 99.7mph in one road test. It was probably THE best handling American car of the 1960s.
