Best spotweld cutter?
« on: May 21, 2011 - 08:02:20 PM »
I need a better spotweld cutter. I have the cheap Napa one. It's alright, but it tends to jump around alot, even when using a marking punch. I have been looking at both the Eastwood "no walk" or whatever it's called, the one that has the small bit in the middle to make a "pilot hole" so it can't walk around, and the cobalt ones that have a point in the middle to cut first and then the bit cuts the spot weld instead of the outside ring like the eastwood. Which should I get? Thanks for the input.

Buy Blair and be done with it. I have tried and used just about every spotweld cutter, nothing cuts faster  and lasts longer

I used Eastwood cutters to remove the entire front clip of the"GOLDFISH" and only went through two of them,I drilled a very small pilot hole and it was no trouble at all.Only took me an hour at the most and it came out clean,Brusco

NOw it requires paying a lot more attention, but I have found that using an air hammer work the best at breaking spot welds. I had to remove both inner fenders on my 70 Challenger, after an hour of fighting with drilling out spot welds on one and still not done I switched to the air hammer and finished it in like five minutes, then got the other one out in like 15 minutes.

But like I said you really have to be careful or you will damage the metal you don't want to replace.

I've been using the hammer too, but I tend to get sideways sometimes so I really like the cutter. I have actually been looking at this carbide cutter. It's made for cutting new car steel, so I would imagine it would cut through the old stuff like butter.....It's really expensive though so I don't think I would be getting one of these for a while, just a possible future investment.....
