Quicktime Bellhousing RM 6073
« on: January 30, 2011 - 08:45:45 AM »
Hi guys.
Ive got my bellhousing fitted and im wondering how you bolt up the starter motor?????
Normally theres a stud and a bolt! Ive got 2 threads that take 3/8 bolts?
Has anybody had experience with this?
Do i make bushes that take up the extra diameter from bolt to starter?
Any help really appreciated!
Ive searched the web everywhere for an answer??? :dunno: :clueless:

Not cool , the bolt size should be 7/16 , I would tap the holes out to the larger size , I assume there is a cup inside the bell to center the starter nose , if so you just need to keep the starter tight , no bushings required

There is no cup to locate the end of the starter Chryco! I've read elsewhere that other QuickTime bellhousings don't have that cup and that they have had no problems. They don't mention the smaller thread size but?? My motor is in at this stage which makes it hard to sort out :(

then you would have to use a bushing to center it & it puts stress on the starter where it is not designed to support the load , I would contact the manufacturer of the belhousing to see how they handle it

I can't remember but the locating hole opening for your starter looks like part of the hole is covered by the block. Does your starter fit in there and if so how can you be sure the alignment with the ring gear teeth is ok?

I figure in a worse case senario if you have to fab one it may not be to bad. Lots of early model quicktime bells have that problem, thats why i picked up mine for $350 brand new. I will draw a sketch of what i have in mind for a possible fix, then do a quick mock up and see if it works out. If it does I'll be sure to let you know.

Hey dodgeboy, are you running the 3/8 bolts that came with the housing? I ended up making 2 bushes out of ally to take up the size difference and using the 3/8 bolts. Haven't started it yet,but alignment appears good.  Fingers crossed :)...

Grade 8 (ARP) Shoulder Bolts - 7/16 body with a 3/8-16 thread.  Or you can drill the 3/8 thread out with a 3/8" drill bit and tap with the 7/16 thread.

Dodgeboys - Aren't you running an offset flywheel on your 6.1 install.  The new flywheels do not require a spacer of any type to line up.

Just a quick note, the starter cover is available from Quick Time if you are concerned over dirt migration.  Ross is the contact there and he's a quality guy to deal with.

Well my motor is up an running and boy what a weapon! The starter works fine with the 2 3/8 bolts and ally bushes. If the motor comes out at some stage I might drill to suit larger bolts. The housing is a real quality unit and provides heaps of clearance all round. Btw QuickTime has been bought out by Prestolite now and Ross still runs his side of things. I'm very happy with how it all turned out and can't wait to go racing this weekend :)
Cheers guys
Pete

Had a great weekend of racing! Best time of 8:89 at 80 mph over the 1/8th mile. I was running 15/275/65 series street tyres and a 5400 rpm msd chip. No traction in 1st and 2nd. Wow it was fun  :burnout:
Anyway i was having trouble with my clutch and it turned out all the geometry was wrong for the linkages and the pivot ball bracket on the housing was bending. :banghead:
Last minute fix before heading off racing. The bracket was removed and all braced up with another plate and 2 gussets. The zbar had the motor side linkage cut off and moved closer too the housing and had some extra holes drilled so we could fine tune it. Turned out 95% better but im told the best way is to run a hydraulic throw out bearing?
Has anybody ran 1 of these?
