Eliminating ballast resistor
« on: February 10, 2011 - 08:39:46 PM »
This may have been discussed before, but I would like to eliminate the ballast resistor if possible, just to make the car a little more reliable. Do I just need a different coil to do this? If so, why didn't Mopar use a different coil in the first place?

One reason I went with an MSD 6AL box was to get rid of the ballast resistor.

You need a different electronic ignition system. Keep the same coil. Mallory, MSD, etc you can do away with the resistor. The stock system needs the resistor to dissipate some power to preserve the coil/electronics. Newer designs use more efficient ways to control power than creating heat with a ceramic wire wound resistor.

Doesn't the HEI upgrade do this? Look for the $25 ignition upgrade thread.

:iagree: Yup, there's lots of different ignition systems out there to choose from.
