70-71 gauges vs 72 -74
« on: February 20, 2011 - 10:29:52 AM »
Can you tell me what the difference is between 70,71 rally gauges and the 72 and beyond rallies. 2nd will they interchange. My 1972 ralley gauges were stolen and insurance replaced them but I have not installed them and I think they my be the early version. It may be too late to return these to where ever they purchased them. It has been sitting for a year or so. I looked through the posts and got some great ideas like the jig to do a mockup of the dash outside of the car. But I did not see anything about numbers and fit differences between the gauges early 70's & mid 72's. This is the most informative site on the net. Thank You All!!!
Numbers on rear of gauges 2985935   04091   301345-1  301344-1  3112 and the pentagram.  7K tack 150 speedo Fasten seat belt on right side of bezel.

'70-'71 cluster had an 8000 rpm tach, the '72-'74 had a 7000 rpm tach. The clock and speedo reset knobs came out through the wood grain bezel via a cable on the 70-71's, the knobs came straight out from the tach and clock through the clear on the 72-74's. Could be other differences, those are the obvious ones. If you got a 70-71, it is generally worth more than the 72-74 and you probably won't have much trouble swapping with someone to get the 72-74 cluster.

If you have a 7K tach, it has to be the 72-74 gauge set-up. As was stated, where the clock and trip odometer reset knobs are at will tell you.
