Third member problem?
« on: February 24, 2011 - 07:47:12 PM »
I sold my 8 3/4 center section to another c-c member here. While it was in my car I never had one once of trouble out of it and it performed perfectly. Once reinstalled in his car his tells me it is making tons of accel and decel noise to the point it resonates in his car. I'm not doubting him but what could have happened?? It was shipped cross country and I was wondering if it could have been dropped as I insured it. Any other thoughts?

Is it a sure grip?  If so did he just use differential fluid or did he use differential fluid and the friction modifier.  I don't know if it makes a difference in sound; but it may.

Both good points and I will ask him this. It is a sure grip. The good news is that his gear guy checked it out and said the pattern was good so it cant be too bad. He also said the pinion nut was a little loose and that one of the u bolt straps was a little bent which could indicate it was dropped in shipping. Hopefully retorquing the pinion nut will solve the issue.

Make sure he knows to run the friction modifier or additive. Many people don't know to run it or forget to run it.

I second that friction additive for the sure grip.  Went for a ride in a friends car who forgot to add it and we chased down the noise for a while.  It ended up being that additive.  I'm betting it's the same case with yours.
