Penstar vinyl top
« on: July 06, 2011 - 04:26:27 PM »
I'm going to have to buy a new vinyl top for my 1970 dodge challenger deputy, again.
Has anyone ever bought one from penstar? if so, how is the quality? Is it sewed together so it will fit perfectly? (my old one wasn't sewed properly giving uneven seams, they went from narrow to wide)

Opinions please,

Thanks,

Antoon

Where did you buy the first one?  I got mine from Legendary.

I can`t recommend Penstar after what I went through with my AAR hood from them. If Legendary sells vinyl tops my advice would be to go with them! Do a search here for Penstar see what you find.

I'm not sure where I got my last one. Was the legendary piece "pretty good", "very good" or "excellent"

The quality of the Legendary top is excellent.  The installation was NOT.

The grain pattern of the Legendary top matches my original top exactly.

What went wrong with the installation?
I had the problem that there was too much material at the place where it goes on the c-pillars, causing wrinkles, and the seams were not even, making it look like it was glued on by someone who was drunk.

The body shop contracted with a guy to install the top.  I don't think he used enough glue.  In certain lighting, you can see some bubbles in the top.  You can push them down with your fingure but they pop back up after awhile.   I'm not worrying about it right now.  I'm going to get the car together and see what it does in the sun.

Same with mine, only it a;so started to wrinkle on the c-pillars. If you still have the windows out, I would change it while you can, otherwise you have a lot more work on your hand.

From what I have been told, the problem you describe may actually be from too much glue.  The heat of the day/sun reactivates the glue, causing it to lift.  I had the same problem on the Challenger I am building for cndchallenger.  It would look great for about a day and then the next day have numerous bubbles. I decided to tear it off and get a new one installed.

Just got the new Legendary top from Dante - I HIGHLY recommend buying from him :2thumbs:

If it's any consolation, Penstar's tent was caved in from the rain today at Carlisle.
