Mechanical Fuel Pumps For Higher HP Big Blocks
« on: February 28, 2011 - 04:41:58 PM »
Hey all,

Finishing up a 512 stroker for my car and was wondering what a good mechanical fuel pump would be for it.  I've looked at the MP P4007039AB and the Carter GM4862, but I'm not sure the MP one will have enough flow.  Anyone have any experience with either of these or another one they can recommend?  Let me know please what info you may need to give any recommendations.  I'm not looking to go to a electric setup yet, but if I absolutely have to I will. Thanks!

Are you just going to use your car at the track? I say that because this Carter pump is too much pressure for street use. I have the street version of this pump on my car, and even at WOT for a while my fuel pressure gauge never wavers.

It will see probably 98% street time.  I'll want to go to the track once or twice just to see what it'll do.  The pressure was something else that I was concerned about.  I've been thinking regulators too.

Yeah, I had to put on a regulator even with my street pump. Is was putting out 8+ PSI.

Do you happen to know what the part number is on that Carter pump you are using is?  What regulator are you running?

MEK - Is your street pump the Carter GM4845 with 6-8psi pressure?   For your fuel pressure gauge, what brand are you using, are you running mechanical or electric?  I like the mechanical gauges, but most folks say don't plumb fuel into the passenger compartment.  thanks.

I don't know the part number off hand. It looks exactly like the GM 4862, but puts out 6-8 PSI. From Summits website it appears they have redone the design. The GM 4845 has the same specs. as mine. The regulator I'm using is some Summit brand cheapie with no return line. It has held up fine for 7 years now.

As I said above, those are the specs of mine, but maybe the re-did the design some? As for my fuel pressure gauge, I run both mechanical and electrical. Call me anal.    The mechanical is under the hood, and I trust it as the truth. The electrical isn't quite as accurate, but I can tell when my pressure takes a dive. I had a worn pushrod activating my fuel pump, and it was worthless at WOT. Thankfully the mechanical gauge helped me diagnose it. You can see in the picture I mounted it in the switch panel.

You can use the carter just put a pressure regulator on it. Been running one for years.

I thought I would re-visit this thread again. There is a speed shop in my neck of the woods that is great to deal with. Here is a hi-volume pump made by Holley that they have on E-Bay.
