Hello,

I'm getting ready to rebuild the 727 in my 69 Coronet R/T and would like input/suggestions from the group. The R/T is mostly street driven/raced so I'm not looking to build a 600HP capable trans, just a good tough trans that can take occasional punishment. There already is a B&M shift kit installed. I'm also using the stock converter.

1. Does anyone know what ratio kickdown lever is stock in a BB 727?    Is going to the 5.0 lever worth it ?

2. Is it worth installing  the 5th clutch plate? Do I really need to add the 11th & 12th pressure springs like the HEMI  727 has?  What makes the red-lined friction plates better than OEM?

3. Is the "race" kevlar kickdown band the flexible backing style or the stiff backing style?  Which would be better for this application?

4. What are the advantages/disavantages of removing the accumulator spring and putting in the rod?

Mike, when I rebuilt the 727 that's behind my 392 I used the Pioneer Master kit from Checker Auto. It was about $90 and has the kevlar bands. I also used the B&M Transpack and a 5.0 lever. The stock lever is a 3.2, and the 5.0 makes the tranny shift REALLY hard from 2nd to 3rd! When you have your foot in it you don't notice it, but cruising around town you will, and it can be annoying. For your use, I would recommend going to the dealership and seeing if you can get a 4.2 lever, they should still be available. If I ever pull my tranny that's what I'm going to. We took the accumulator spring out on mine, and it doesn't seem to have any adverse effects. As for the 5 clutches, you will have to change the clutch drum to do that, and in my opinion it wouldn't be worth the added expense (unless you happen to have a five clutch drum lying around :)). I'm not sure about the extra springs, we just put back what was in there and as I said, my tranny is holding up real well. Maybe someone else has some input on the preassure springs?

 The stock kick down lever cab be anyting depending on application & yes the 5.0 is worth putting in ,it wiill apply more pressure to the band.
The stiff bands are better.
putting the rod in the accumulater makes it shift harder but reduces wear , I wouldn`t worry about the extra clutch unless you have a drum that will take them & you shouldn`t need the extra springs  ;)

Were the Kevlar bands the flexible backing or the rigid backing?

Jeez Mike, you got me on that one, how do you tell the difference? ??? I remember the kevlar lining was bonded to a steel band, if that helps any!
