Challenger Hood safety latch
« on: March 22, 2011 - 03:39:04 PM »
I have a '70 Challenger power bulge hood that originally used a lever style safety latch.  This hood doesn't have the provisions for attaching the bracket for the "pull-rod" style safety latch, found on later Challenger hoods.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to attach a pull-rod style safety latch on a '70, non pull-rod style hood?  Or another idea for an easily accessible safety latch?

Car is a '73 so the grill interferes with using the original lever style safety latch and the hood is finished so I can not weld/tack on a bracket to the underhood side.

the pull-rod style safety latch  attaches with bolts on the hook part and the pull rod has a bracket that is attached with a type of sheet metal screws,,its a small bracket that just holds the rod straight,,you say yours doesn't have the provisions for the 2 sheet metal screws which is just a small raised area offset to the left of the center of the hood,,there should still be an area on that side that is raised enough to put in small screws with out penetrating the surface that would support the small bracket,,even if u adapt a smaller bracket with a hole big enough for the pull rod,its just to aline the rod and keep it from dangling loose, maybe a picture of the area that it needs attached to would help determine if u have such an area

The first is '70 hood w/o the pull rod provisions.

Picture two, is a hood with the pull rod style latch and how it attaches.  As you can see the hood is stamped for the bracket to attach.  Where the other hood does not have the area flanged out for the bracket to attach.

only thing i could suggest is to bond a small square piece of metal that's thick enough to put 2 threaded holes in and attach your bracket that way,,there are some very strong bonding products that are as strong as welding and u don't ruin the paint,,just paint the steel block the color of the bracket or paint it to match the hood

:iagree:The bonding is a good idea.  I would go through the block with the screw and put a nut on the back of the mounting screw.  There should be room to do this on the hood with at least one of the screws/bolts.
