About to start my engine and I think I did a stupid thing...
« on: August 12, 2016 - 09:41:56 AM »
So I'm about to start my newly rebuilt 440 engine today. I pulled the oil input shaft out a few days ago in anticipation of priming. When testing my gauges, I accidently turned the key a click to far and engaged the starter for a revolution. I'm guessing now that threw my distributor alignment all out of whack. I marked the input shaft and distributor but I'm guessing this stupidity added additional revolutions that aren't as simple as just lining up the marks?

What are my choices? Do I need to pull all the spark plugs and turn the engine over by hand until I reach #1 tdc? Instead of turning it by hand, can I turn the key a few clicks at a time until I feel pressure at #1 then line up with the crank mark or is that a big no no?

Pull #1 plug, bump the starter till you feel pressure, line up the timing marks, the slot on the drive gear should be in line with the camshaft...Point the rotor toward somewhat down & forward...
