4 Speed 440 Bellhousing WANTED
« on: April 20, 2011 - 11:46:31 PM »
I seek an E Body alluminum Bellhousing to hook up to my 1977 440 engine / A833 4 Speed
I have no idea if my 440 block being a '77 matters but want it to work/bolt to the Factory A833 trans
I do not believe Chrysler Corp built ANY manual trans After '74?
Any/All leads greatly appreciated. This is for my new '70 Challenger Convertible clone: goodbye column shift /318
HELLO! 440 / 4 SPEED!!!

Thanks again C-C forum,

PM sent Will need to know the bearing retainer size as mine is set up for the "Big" bearing retainer. I have other bellhousings, but they are CAST IRON set up for the smaller, front  bearing retainer.

you might have an issue with bolting it right up.  check to see if you have a cast or forged steel crank.  the input shaft on the trans will not fit into the end of a cast crank.

I am going through the same thing with my challenger convertible right now. I have a 1978 440 with a cast crank which is externally balanced. If you have the same you will need to do a few extra things.

1) You will need an externally balanced flywheel or change your neutral balanced one to an externally balanced one (can be done by drilling  a few precisely placed holes-I have the template if you need).
2)You will also need to get and adapter pilot bearing it sits in the larger 1.8" outer hole that the torque convertor sits in. Brewers sells then for $ 12.95
3) The final issue will be the length of your transmission input shaft. It will have to be cut down a bit or you will need to drill you crank a bit (larger diameter then the trans shaft if you don't want to cut your tranny)

You could also replace your crank with a forged one that is already drilled to eleiminate all the above issues. I haven't decided which way to go yet but I'll probably end up doing it the hard way which ever way that is.

Thank you

Cooter/Edison/Crocha

just bought the '77 440 and was told it was a steel crank but now my mechanic says it's cast
so if a new forged crank is the cleanest solution does Brewers sell them?
I do not want to cut/alter my A833 as it's a correct 1970 date code trans for my '70 Challenger

thanks again C-C!

I don't think they would sell them. I see them on ebay and you may have to buy a parts engine it's quite a project to switch out.
