« on: May 07, 2011 - 09:40:59 PM »
Anyone have any tips on installing the timing cover seal on a smally (the seal around the crank snout).

My timing cover gasket kit came with a think felt washer...is that to cushin the timign cover while I drive in the seal????

Thanks,

the felt gasket is used in farm equipment / high dust environment , not needed for street use
you need a seal driver or or a block of wood to spread the load over the entire seal as it is driven in so it will go in straight

:iagree:  Princess Auto and spend a wee bit more and buy the metal set, it'll drive bearing races, too. A dab of Lubriplate on the outside and on the inr lip is a good thing too. Listen for the sound change when it seats. RTV at the surfaces where it meets the oil pan.

I need to do mine as well.  I remember the last one I did was with the timing cover on the bench and it was really tight to get in.  Anybody got any special tips on doing this in situ ??
