 Ideally, last step after bodywork, have the old bumper (or even a new one) tweaked, fitted, and if needed rechromed (mark the bracket locations if removed.) My bumpers were a little war torn after learning to drive in high school.  Eventually I had them straightened and rechromed by a top LA shop with a well tested jig. It still took some time to get it right though.

That's good to hear. Even if I think it looks a little rough, atleast its normal and hopefully people won't point at it and laugh.

Today i was fighting the rear in my challenger. I had a rechromed original and replaed it with brand new AMD piece. My car was hit in right rear someday and after the resto we still neede almost 1/2" of shim to get the bumper right on the right side. However the bumper was stright, nice and fits perfectly - as the original piece.
Maybe you need to massage it and tweak the brackets a little to get the gaps even?

LOL it seems I posted too fast... my AMD rear bumper fits nicely indeed, however when I bolte on the old (OEM) bumperettes it's a disaster. They stick 3/4" further than with the old, original bumper. See pictures. Shimming can get th L tabs closer so that I can fasten the lower bumperette screw but it looks awful.

what you could do is black out the inner flange to darken the area so it doesnt look so different, use a piece of black electrical tape first to see if it make a difference to you , if you like that then paint it on, i have see others do this.
