Prices??
« on: April 27, 2011 - 01:49:16 PM »
It seems that a lot more cars are being sold by dealers as opposed to private parties...at least it seems that way to me.

Has anyone out there purchased (or know anyone who has purchased) from a dealer lately?  The prices I see from dealers seem anywhere from high to crazy high, and I'm wondering just what a car that is advertised at $45 K would actually sell for these days?

Any advice, thoughts would be much appreciated.

Bill

I have always noticed when the economy heads south for awhile I see Corvettes on the front lawn for sale.  The wife probably tells the old man that for years the Vette was worth so much and now we need the money so sell it and put your money where your mouth is.

I think in a way the same thing is happening with the muscle cars.  The hapless enthusiast is hard up for cash and can't get what he wants in a private sale so he either consigns the car to a dealer or cashes out for what he can get.

The dealer needs his profit margin so the buyer pays through the nose in the process.  A good deal can be had but you have to wait out the dealer to get there.

Buyer beware as you are dealing with some pretty shady types and that original car may be too good to be true.

Bill,

I think a better idea is to let the board know what you looking for (model & all the specifics) along with the condition requirements and see what is offered.  We can then all kick it around to determine if it is a good deal or not.

Hi Charlie,

Thanks for the note.  What I'm looking at are 70-71, 4 speed cars, prefer an R/T, but not hugely hung up on engine size.  Prefer an orginal motor, but if the rest of the car was correct, that's not a show stopper for me.  I've seen a couple in person that were dressed up nicely, but once i crawled around (and under) there were significant rust issues.  Not looking for a project, no time, and I've done it before.  The prices that I'm seeing for cars such as this through "collector car dealers" are high $40's and up from there.  That's more than I have to spend, so just trying to find out how inflated these asking prices are, and what the real price is that anyone has gotten a car for through a "collector car dealer".
