Aircraft paint stripper or any paint stripper, hose the parts down with stripper, put them in trash bag or cover them with it for about 15 minutes, rinse off, repeat if there are stubborn areas, but usually that does the trick, it will not harm the chrome or stainless.

get some laquer thinner from the hardware store, they usually have small containers of it.And to put a nice finish on it use Mothers aluminum polish on 0000 steel wool(also at the hardware store) and wipe off with a nice soft cloth.
Doug
ps  I wouldn't use brake fluid as it stays in the steel and may show up later and could attack the plastic :2cents:

I don't know if it works on automotive paint, but I use a product from Home Depot called Citri-Strip to remove paint. Smells good too!

Well, I just got done trying Citri Strip earlier today. Shoulda named it citri rip off. I put it on one of my doors, let it set (wet) for 48 hours.
Didn't do a thing to the paint.  :dunno:
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Guess it doesn't work on automotive paint then. Works wonders on other types of paint, I use it all the time to remove paint from the porcelain gas station signs I purchase and the paint just slides right off. Oh well, it was a thought.

thanks for the input. i wound up using carb cleaner and 0000 steel wool and they came out real nice. i had to strip the upper and lower long moldings and all 6 cheese grater moldings. my fingers hurt a little when i was done but it was worth it. and now i get to put it all back together!

My experiance.
No No if u leave the stripper on to long
it will curl dry out and harden the paint.
Read directions.  Paint should curl in 15 minutes.
I dip the steel wool into stripper to activate the process.
Steel wool will ruin chrome and scratch stainless steel.

I polish my stainless with a bench polisher. variable speed 1500 to 2300 rpm .
Get some stainless buffing compound and buffers and Mechanix gloves. get er done.
Google stainless polishing.
