Sour seat foam/ cushions
« on: July 29, 2010 - 04:05:49 PM »
My A100 seats foam smells like its was pulled from a pond and then left in someones basement for 30 years.

How can I get that sour water smell out?

I don't really want to pull the foam off of the frames since I am not sure it will go back.

Try baking soda. It might pull the smell out.

You can always wash them at the quarter car wash, vacuum the excess water, then put them in a small closet with a dehumidifier in with it. It will suck all of the water out of it just like it does a damp smell in a basement. May take a few days so the smaller the closet the better.

Let me run down what I have tried so far....

First a soaked them with Simple Green. I let that sit for a day or so then I washed the hell out of them. I let that sit out in the sun for a couple days. Then I sprayed them with Vinegar and let them sit a day. Then I just tried rubbing baking soda into them yesterday and I need to go see how that worked.....

Think your gonna have to go deeper that cleaning the surface.....
Maybe soak the whole seat in a tub of carpet cleaner/water.

Febreze.

Before I replaced my seat covers I gave the seat foam a good dose of Febreze. That stuff is amazing. After a couple of days, NO stench in the foam.   :jumping:

Thanks Guys! I think I will try Febreeze as well after the baking soda takes effect which I believe it is.

Maybe I should make my own commercial..... then show a burn out in the end!  :burnout:

you have mildew,  you get a mild solution of bleach and spray them through out the foam . done!

I can't believe I didn't try Bleach.

Well I used Baking Soda & Simple Green and it improved for sure.

I guess worst case down the road i can pull the seats and start over. Thanks for the tips!!

I know this is an older post, but this might help future guys out....

Go to a local (or online) dive shop ... yes a SCUBA shop.
Buy a bottle of Sink the stink. should would for carpet as well.

Follow the directions.... you just wet the stuff down, let it soak etc.

This stuff is to get the funk out of a wet suit (for those that pee in theirs suit and it does not wash out.
The lil organisms eat away the stuff that causes a sinking smell.

Oh and its pretty inexpensive too!   :ylsuper:
