340 blowing oil - time for a stroker?
« on: June 01, 2011 - 10:19:36 PM »
Still runs, but blows oil out the breathers. It was going bad last year & looks like the rings just won't seal anymore. :(

Supposed to have J heads with 2.02s (they are #915s). I assume its otherwise a standard cast crank 340. New(er) parts are the 650 edelbrock carb ( have 750 too), air gap intake (& Mopar M1), Comp XE274 cam, SFi balancer and TTI headers.

I know I have to get it rebuilt, but wondering what approach to take. Stock size or stroker. Want an engine that can handle revs well for track days, but also want streetable power for daily driving. My engine builder is suggesting we just build the .030 over 340 block he has in hand with a stoker kit. Not much more than rebuilding my 340?  :dunno:

Thoughts appreciated.

Scott

Well, even though I'm a small block guy. you have to repeat after me, "there's NO replacement, for displacement". There, don't you feel better?

IMO absolutly stroke it , the cost of parts is now low enough it will cost about the same to stroke it as just rebuilding it , & it is not like you have a good crank now , take it up to 408 "

"Blows oil out the breathers"

Are you running a PCV? If not, you'll blow oil out every orifice you've got.

I'm confused....would there be a bad time for a stroker?

Maybe years ago when cranks were mega expensive.

Definitely stroke it.

I don't think there's bad time, and I know I'd love the power, just thinking about the impact on the rev limit. I'd like to be able to go as high as 7000 rpm, because I'm easily redlining 00 on the Mosport straightaway w/ 3.55 gears.

Should I upgrade the heads too? There's a local guy with a set of Eddy aluminum heads for sale...  :working:

And I have a PCV already but it still huffs oil out like a top fueler at idle. You can see it and smell it. Driveable but nasty :(

You will not need to spin it as high with the stroker.  I cross the line at like 4600rpms with my 3.23's and 26" tires at 109mph.  Was built primarily as a street cruiser.

If you can swing the heads buget wise, sure why not! Any weight off the nose is always a good thing! :2thumbs:
I'm just north of you, if you need a good engine builder I can suggest one?
I've had a ride in Toms car ....it's pretty quick! :grinyes:
