Blown MSD Blaster 2 coil?
« on: May 27, 2011 - 12:23:03 AM »
Long story short, I had my MSD 6AL box under my dash. Had the car running and driving when I pulled up to my parking spot. I was letting it idle and I heard a pop and smoke coming from the dash. The car sputtered out and I looked under the dash to see the source of the smoke. I observed about 30 ants come crawling out of my smokey ignition box.
I couldn't get the car started again so I immediately ordered a new one from Speedway. I hooked it up per the instructions and the way the old one was (had about 6000 miles on it and worked fine). It still doesn't start with the new one. It almost fires but just doesn't go. I am getting spark out of the plug wires. Could it be a bad Blaster 2 coil? Anyone ever have an MSD box go south for whatever reason and take the coil with it?

You need to get those ants back in there and put them to work.  Tell them you'll add their life partners to their insurance and give the 20 cents more per hour.

Try grounding the neg side of the coil for a sec, then pull off the wire. If it sparks holding the coil wire next to ground, it's good.    The pickup could have blown too. Plug a spare one into the input of the MSD and swing a screwdriver next to it to see if the MSD tells the coil to fire. If you have a spare distributor, plug it in and spin the shaft.

If you are getting a spark, the coil is likely good. Fuel not toooo old?

I ran a full tank through it after I got back from Iraq and filled it up again, which is at half now. I'll check the filters just in case.
