TOO HOT!!!!!

How do I make my 383 run cooler? I have a block temp of around 360 degrees and around 480 EGT. I'm running a 160 stat (she did this with a stock stat too).  :villagers: :swear: :stomp: :banghead: :pullinghair: :bricks1: :22yikes:

Make sure you have a good unclogged radiator of the proper size.  You need to be running a fan shroud and confirm that your clutch fan is working properly.(if your fan is of the clutch type)  Make sure your lower radiator hose has a spring in it since some of the newer hoses can be sucked shut without a spring.  Some people also like to add some WaterWetter to the cooling system.

Finally, make sure your engine tuned properly since a poorly tuned engine can run hotter than normal.

I have a spring in the lower hose, shroud around the fan and a recent flush on the rad. I have no problem doing it again though. I am taking it to my mechanic later for a new ps pump and steering gear box, i'll have him tune it.

If you don't want to look stock and your radiator is too small (or old) then a new aluminum raditor is cheap... they work really well.  I ended up with a nice big one.  Also reduced engine timing advance.  I replaced my t-stat incase it was bad and now run a 180*.

Yep, 180 stat, aluminum crossflow rad, higher volume fan and a pusher electric up front with a thermo switch.   It gets muey caliente here in the desert. 120+ in the summer

I run at 180 to 210 now in outside temps up to 100 degrees.

Oh yeah and I dropped another 5 degrees just by putting on a new rubber seal from rad support to hood.  Effective only when moving of course.

from the egt, the car seems to be running pretty rich as I would expect it to be higher...Of course, I am talking about egt and not what a temp gun reflects off the pipes.

What is your coolant temperature? That is generally more meaningful

I had bad overheating issues.  I bought an aluminum radiator, Mopar aluminum water pump and housing and 160 T-stat.  While the front of the motor was apart I flushed it with a hose in both directions.  A TON of crap came out.  While doing the water pump it might be worth it to flush the block like that.  My engine only had about 80k on it but it was pretty sludged up from whatever antique antifreeze was left in it.  Obviously if your engine was rebuilt recently you may not need to.

Oh and x2 on the timing/mixture settings.  They can have an effect on how hot everything gets too.
Yes I own a 1972 Dodge Challenger Convertible T/A S/E with a 440 Six Pak. Can it get any more wrong?

Advancing timing & runing on the rich side cools temps , tuning has a ton to do with heat
180* stats seem to run coolest
under 220 if fine but it makes more power at lower temps
