440 Valley Pan
« on: May 31, 2011 - 01:39:17 PM »
I'm currently replacing the stock intake manifold and carb with the Edelbrock performer RPM manifold and Thunder Series 800 cfm carb. The engine is all stock, for now. I just pulled the valley pan and noticed that there wasn't any gaskets used on either side of the valley pan. Is this normal? The replacement valley pan came with four gaskets. Should I use the gaskets?

My original 440. 1970, didn't have any gaskets on the valley pan, so yes its normal.

sometimes you are not able to use the paper gaskets. Depends on how the machine work is.  You will know how by when you go trying to line up intake bolts.

I would use them if possible.  Sometimes it is impossible to use any.  If you can use one on each side under the pan, do it.  If you can use two, then do it.  If you can use none, try to use some good gasket sealer (not silicone-it breaks down when gas gets to it) on both sides.

As said above...dummy it up with two on each side and see if you can start bolts on both sides...

If not, remove the top one and try again...if the bolts start, do it that way

If not possible, remove them both.
