rear end spool interchange question
« on: December 03, 2004 - 05:13:40 PM »
found a 76 power wagon in a wrecking yard today which appears to have a limited slip rear end.
rear cover has 12 bolts on it, and like i said it's a 76.

will the spool from this axle fit an 8 3/4 carrier? read somewhere some center carriers interchanged, but don't remember which.

this weekend is 24.95 rear ends, so would be nice to pick it up for that, but money wasted if it won't go in. probably a cone tyoe, but for $25, still worth it.

no it will not work , if it has a removable rear cover the ring gears is a different size & it will not fit

ok, found it. dana 60 center sections supposedly interchange.

9 ¾ AKA Dana 60
Introduced in 1966. This rear end was not offered in A body cars except for the Hemi. The early rear ends were 23 tooth "Power Lok" (1966 - 1969) differentials. In 1970 the 9 ¾ went to 35 tooth axle shafts and were called "Track Lok" differentials. These particular ones will interchange with 8 ¾ axles, bearings and seals.
Info: 10-bolt cover

The 8 3/4 diff uses they same axle brgs & seals as the car application Dana 60 ... yes
But the sure grip unit is designed for a 9 3/4 " ring gear , how do you intend to streatch the 8 3/4 " gear onto the sure grip case ???

ummmm, magic.  ;D (i do have a lincoln 9 1/4 which will fit in a ferd 9 with a small notch in the housing)

that's why i was asking you guys, instead of believing everything i read.

one in the yard isn't a dana anyway, i believe they had 10 bolts. if it was, i would pick it up just because it's only $25. going to measure it and might get it anyway. $25 for a locking 9 1/4 will allow me to spend $$$ on other things for a while before i blow it up.

anyone happen to know total axle width, and spring perch width on a 76 power wagon?
