wrap your headers?

i was told even with the ceramic coating the headers should be wrapped in that heat resistant cloth material or else my enigne bay, steering column, and floor pans would get so hot that it will be uncomfortable to drive? any merit to that statement? if so, what brand wrap would you suggest?

I've seen header wrap on a stock car eat through a header in less than one season. I wouldn't use header wrap period?  Header lifespan will be drastically reduced.

cool. i'm glad i asked. these are a sweet set of doug's headers and i'd hate for them to burn up.

I don't run the wrap with my Doug's.  The coating has held up well.  Doesn't get that hot, never noticed it anyways.  I did use some foil bubble insulation under my carpet though.

I've found that "Header wrap" causes the headers to "Crystalize" and begin to get very brittle and Crack...Pulled a set of Supposedly "Brand new" only run one year headers off a 440 that were wrapped and they were destroyed.

cool. i have one wear point near the sterring column from the previous owner's '67 formula S. Will this cause a problem for my steering column?

Wow, I didn't know that header wrap eats the headers......And I was just looking at a catalog with a ton of options for header wrap too....

You'd think if they were that bad on headers that they wouldn't sell all that great.

On race cars, headers are an expendable part. If wrapping them gains a few horses and necessitates replacement every year or two, so what.

I used header wrap on my Ford because I was too cheap to buy new coated headers or get my existing ones coated. The headers I had were oil stained so the wrap was actually an improvement in the looks department. It made a huge difference in keeping the engine bay and passenger compartment cooler. It hasn't destroyed the headers yet.

They work well but given the choice i'd definately opt for a ceramic coating. Besides the possibly of it reducing the life of your headers, it was a pain in the ass to apply.
